John Elway has One Last Shot at Drafting the Right Quarterback

on

John Elway is a legend in Denver for the 16 years he spent leading the Broncos organization to 148 wins and two Super Bowl trophies. However, his time as a General Manager and Executive Vice President of Football Operations has been questionable, largely on the offensive side of the ball where he cannot seem to find the recipe for drafting top talent — particularly at quarterback.

With the 2018 NFL Draft less than a month away, it would behoove him to screw this up — again. Thus far in his tenure his quarterback selections have been — what’s a nice way to say this — not good. For him to be a first ballot Hall of Fame quarterback and unable to select — and more importantly — develop quarterback talent is troubling.

Even more glaring is the only real success he’s had at the quarterback position has been from players he had no hand in selecting, or developing. That being Tim Tebow in 2011, and Peyton Manning from 2012-15.

This year however, is different. The Broncos sit pretty at No. 5 in the draft, where by that time, there will still be a couple elite quarterback prospects available. However, that’s not good enough for me. Elway needs to hit a homerun. He needs to make a splash and absolutely knock this pick out the park.

So, what does he do?

My suggestion is to make a trade with the Cleveland Browns for the No. 1 pick and get the guy you really want. If it’s Josh Allen, Sam Darnold, or whomever, Elway has an opportunity to quiet the critics who have been on him lately — and rightfully so — and find the next franchise quarterback for the Broncos organization.

This may be Elway’s last shot. He can ill afford to draft another Paxton Lynch or Brock Osweiller (who did have success as a backup actually). John Elway needs to be the talk of the draft, and it needs to be for the right reasons.
