LiAngelo Ball Needs to be the Go-to Man for BC Vytautas Moving Forward

BC Vytautas is set to take on Neptunas today in a LKL showdown. With Vytautas again expected to be shorthanded, it is imperative they look to 19-year-old American star, LiAngelo Ball to lead them to victory.

The assertion of leaning on such a young player may sound too over the top for some, but for those who have actually watched these games, it is evident that LiAngelo is arguably the best offensive player on the team. In just six games, LiAngelo is averaging 14.5 PPG. He’s done this primarily on limited minutes, as he is only averaging 22 MPG. After being inserted in the starting lineup two games ago, LiAngelo has seen his minutes increase as well as his role. However, it is still not enough, and Vytautas coach, Virginijus Seskus has to find a way to increase the touches for LiAngelo as this season winds down.

In the last contest against Lietuvos Rytas, LiAngelo finished with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting. While those may seem like good numbers, it wasn’t enough touches for LiAngelo, which proved to be the downfall of Vytautas as they let the game get away from them in the fourth quarter — in part due to going away from LiAngelo in crucial moments.

The concept of making a teenager your go-to guy is understandably frustrating if you’ve been putting in the hard work the entire season. This appears to be the case at times as there have been many times the Vytautas players will not distribute the ball to LiAngelo when he is open. Take for instance last game against Rytas when LiAngelo called for the ball on three straight possessions in the fourth quarter, and did not get one touch. The decision proved costly as no other player for Vytautas was able to capitalize and generate the offense needed to get them back in the game.

The silver lining in all of this is that there is still time for things to turn around. LiAngelo’s teammates are still learning more and more about him and his preparation, and the more he delivers on his opportunities, the more they will look for him. And with LaMelo out again today, the spotlight will be squarely on LiAngelo to bring a victory home for Vytautas.
